Subaru Outback

The Outback earns the best fuel economy ratings, if only by a few miles per gallon. It's the longest and widest of the group thanks to a more wagon-like crossover design, which can be categorized as more of a midsize model. It offers the same passenger volume as the Forester but more hip and shoulder room for front and rear passengers. It's the only one to come equipped with roof rails with integrated cross bars as standard, as well as offer a six-cylinder engine upgrade. It's also the only one not to offer a manual transmission and instead comes standard with a smooth-shifting continuously variable transmission.

Subaru Forester

The Forester adds up to a few thousand dollars more than its SUV siblings -- but you're investing in capability. It boasts the largest cargo capacity as a midsize SUV and the tallest of the three. You can also attribute its more accommodating interior to its boxier hatchback design. Opt for one of the Forester 2.0XT models to unlock the exclusive engine upgrade -- a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Subaru Crosstrek

Go edgier for less with the Crosstrek! It's undeniably the most modern of the group with contemporary curves, thick fenders, and an overall more fashionable design. This compact crossover slots in below its siblings with the lowest starting price. This small SUV is the most compact of the group, which makes for less cargo and passenger space -- but easier parking maneuvers. The Crosstrek is the ideal companion for urban adventurers who are investing in a crossover for the cargo versatility rather than cavernous cabin space. And despite its compact dimensions, it boasts the most front legroom of the three! Unlike its siblings, the Crosstrek can only come powered by one engine -- a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, versus the standard 2.5-liter powerhouse on the Outback and Forester.

Now we've seen the differences, what are some standard aspects of these crossovers?

All three vehicles offer the following as standard:

  • Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system
  • Potent SUBARU BOXER® engine
  • 6.2-inch touchscreen interface with SUBARU STARLINK™ multimedia
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Rearview camera
  • A whopping 8.7 inches of ground clearance

Shared standard or available performance and safety features include:

  • Vehicle Dynamics Control System
  • Subaru's X-Mode stability control
  • Subaru EyeSight® driver assist technologies
